Hints and Tips for Choosing a Stove

Heat Outputs

When considering a Contemporary appliance, look carefully at outputs.

• The upright stance of many modern appliances means that they can have a dramatic presence, but low outputs, as the fire beds are relatively small.
  
• It’s no accident, or just national preference that contemporary appliances tend to be free standing.
  Often these are 'Convector' style appliances and don’t function well in 'Inglenook' settings.
  
• The 'Inset' or 'Cassette' stoves and room heaters, can provide the big heating outputs, but care must be taken to protect plaster wall finishes, either by cladding, venting, or positioning.

UK Building Regulations and Foreign Manufacturers

Don’t be taken in by foreign manufacturers catalogue pictures that often show what is acceptable within the building regulations of the country of origin, and always show appliances off in the best possible light!

For example, legislation with regard to hearths across Europe is so diverse that often an appliance may be illustrated with no hearth - a contravention of UK building regulations.

If in doubt…..Ask!

Also note that most contemporary styled stoves are 'State of the art' in terms of efficiency.
This can make them very demanding of chimneys and flues. It is generally the rule that a contemporary appliance will not give of its best in an unlined flue….take this into account when purchasing.
